Max Purcell Returns to Australian Davis Cup Squad After Doping Ban

BRISBANE — Max Purcell has been named to the Australian Davis Cup squad for the upcoming World Group 1 tie against Poland, marking his return to international competition following an 18-month anti-doping suspension. The tie is scheduled to take place at Brisbane’s Pat Rafter Arena on 19-20 September.

Purcell, a 2022 Wimbledon and 2024 US Open men’s doubles champion, accepted a provisional suspension in December 2024 after receiving an IV vitamin infusion in Bali that exceeded the 100ml threshold. While the substances were on the World Anti-Doping Agency’s approved list, the volume violated regulations. His two-year sanction was reduced by 25% due to his cooperation with the International Tennis Integrity Agency.

Captain Lleyton Hewitt has selected a team led by Alex de Minaur, alongside James Duckworth, Rinky Hijikata, and Adam Walton. Purcell, currently ranked world No 803, holds a 9-2 record in Davis Cup doubles rubbers. Poland’s squad will be led by Kamil Majchrzak, with Hubert Hurkacz absent from the roster for the September meeting.
