LONDON — West Ham United earned their first Women’s Super League victory of the season on Friday, defeating London City Lionesses 2-1. The result marks a significant early-season win for the Hammers at their home venue.
Kelly Gago opened the scoring in the 21st minute, capitalizing on a long pass from Seraina Piubel that split the London City defense. Gago rounded goalkeeper Elene Lete to give the hosts the lead. Despite the summer signing of England goalkeeper Mary Earps, Lete remained in the starting lineup for London City manager Eder Maestre.
West Ham doubled their advantage three minutes into the second half when Viviane Asseyi converted after being played through by Riko Ueki. London City attempted a late comeback when Daniëlle van de Donk scored with a backheel finish from a Kadidiatou Diani cross in the 76th minute, but the visitors were unable to find a second goal. Earlier in the match, London City's Alexia Putellas had a chance to equalize but lifted her effort over the bar following a save by Constance Picaud-Inconnu.
