LEIGH — Manchester United collected their first Women's Super League win of the season with a 2-1 victory over West Ham at Leigh Sports Village, while Liverpool beat rivals Everton 2-0 at Anfield, Tottenham thrashed Aston Villa 4-0 and Birmingham drew 3-3 with Crystal Palace at St Andrew's.
Elisabeth Terland headed United in front inside 10 minutes from Anna Sandberg's delivery, and the hosts pushed for a second before the break as Constance Picaud brilliantly tipped Hanna Lundkvist's header over the bar. United started the second half with three chances in three minutes — Andrea Medina hit the bar, Jess Park shot wide and Terland forced another fingertip save from Picaud — before West Ham's first shot on target arrived on the hour when Estelle Cascarino's dipping drive was tipped over by Phallon Tullis-Joyce. With 18 minutes left, Medina made it 2-0 after collecting a pass from Park, before Viviane Asseyi pulled one back for West Ham from the penalty spot after being tripped by Sandberg.
At Anfield, Liverpool secured their first WSL Merseyside derby victory at the stadium with a 2-0 win over Everton. Beata Olsson gave Gareth Taylor's side the perfect start with a looping header in the fourth minute, ending a run of eight defeats in nine WSL games at Anfield, five of them against Everton. Ruby Mace twice denied a second with a block on Natalia Ramos' goal-bound shot and a clearance off the line from Cornelia Kapocs, before Kapocs swept home the second with just under five minutes to go.
Tottenham surged to a 4-0 win against Aston Villa with four second-half goals to move within two points of leaders Manchester City on 10 points from four games. Villa, who sit 13th, held firm until the break before Victoria Pelova opened the scoring in the 54th minute and doubled the lead soon after with a curling effort. Caitlin Dijkstra added a back-post header and Cathinka Tandberg scored on the rebound to put the result beyond reach.
Newly promoted Birmingham remain without a win but rescued a point in a six-goal thriller against Crystal Palace at St Andrew's. Oceane Hurtre struck after just 40 seconds and restored a 2-1 lead three minutes after Shanade Hopcroft's 30th-minute free-kick equaliser following a goalkeeper howler. Palace turned the game around in the second half through Bethany England's 70th-minute rebound and Lexi Lloyd-Smith's one-on-one finish, only for substitute Suzu Amano to hit a deflected 87th-minute equaliser to earn Birmingham their second point of the campaign and deny Palace a second win.
