DENVER — The Dallas Stars defeated the Colorado Avalanche 3-2 in a shootout in Denver, overcoming a pair of overturned Colorado goals and a late tying score to secure the extra point on the second night of a back-to-back for Colorado.
Colorado appeared to score twice in the first period, but both goals were waved off — one for offside on a Jaden Schwartz finish from Fedor Svechkov and another after officials ruled Gabe Landeskog kicked the puck into the net. The period ended 0-0 with Colorado holding a 9-7 edge in shots. Landeskog then put Colorado ahead officially in the second period, deflecting a puck past Dallas netminder Casey DeSmith for a 1-0 lead before Miro Heiskanen tied it 1-1 late in the period, beating Scott Wedgewood cleanly while uncovered.
Dallas took its first lead early in the third despite Colorado holding four power-play chances in the game, as Arttu Hyry scored on a breakaway shorthanded goal to make it 2-1. Brock Nelson answered for Colorado, finding a loose puck near the crease and beating DeSmith to tie the game 2-2 and force overtime. The Avalanche went 0-for-4 on the power play and allowed their third shorthanded goal of the season through seven games.
Overtime was low-event with Dallas recording the only shot on goal in the five-minute period, sending the game to a shootout. Jason Robertson converted against Wedgewood to open, Nazem Kadri tied it for Colorado, Nathan MacKinnon was stopped as the third shooter, and Roope Hintz scored in the fourth round to clinch the 3-2 win for Dallas. Cale Makar played for Colorado after his wife delivered twin boys earlier in the day, while Nic Roy was a surprise scratch with a lower-body injury and Zach L'Heureux remained out with an upper-body injury. Gavin Brindley was recalled and Colorado dressed only 11 forwards. The Avalanche next host the Pittsburgh Penguins on Friday, October 16 at 7:00 p.m. MT.
