MONTREAL — Zachary Bolduc scored the deciding goal in the sixth round of the shootout as the Montreal Canadiens edged the Detroit Red Wings 1-0 Saturday at Bell Centre in a goaltenders' duel. Montreal (2-2-1) snapped a three-game losing streak with its first home win in three tries this season, while Detroit (1-3-1) dropped its second straight after a 6-3 loss to the Seattle Kraken on Friday in its first road game of the season.

Jacob Fowler stopped 30 shots for his second career shutout in his second straight start since being recalled from the Laval Rocket of the American Hockey League on Wednesday. The 21-year-old from Melbourne, Fla., who allowed three goals on 18 shots in Thursday's loss to the Nashville Predators, is filling in for Samuel Montembeault, who is expected to miss 10 to 14 days with a lower-body injury sustained at practice Wednesday. Daniil Tarasov matched him with 30 saves for Detroit in his 100th career NHL game and his first start with the Red Wings since signing as a free agent July 1.

Montreal had three goals overturned by officials. Cole Caufield's shot 1:16 into the game was ruled no goal after review, Bolduc had a second-period tally wiped out for goaltender interference by Jake Evans on Tarasov, and Alexandre Texier was denied midway through overtime for offside. Caufield was held scoreless Saturday; he leads the NHL with 36 goals on Saturdays since the start of the 2024-25 season. The Canadiens went 0-for-4 on the power play and fell to 1-for-17 (5.9 percent) on the season.

Detroit was shut out for the second time in five games to open the season and is averaging just two goals per game. Canadiens fans spent much of the night chanting "We want Larkin" at Red Wings forward Dylan Larkin, the former Detroit captain who requested a trade out of Detroit this past offseason but has shown little interest in joining Montreal or any other Canadian team.

Detroit hosts the New Jersey Devils on Tuesday, while Montreal hosts the Buffalo Sabres on Tuesday.
