EAST RUTHERFORD — The New York Giants outlasted the Arizona Cardinals 36-24 in one of the sloppiest yet most exciting games of the season, sealing the victory with a walk-off pick-six from Tae Banks. New York clamped down defensively in the second half to secure the win, converting 7 of 15 on third down while outgaining Arizona 270-219 yards to improve to 3-1.
It was the Jameis Winston roller coaster. Winston struggled mightily for much of the game, holding onto the ball, throwing recklessly and looking uncomfortable in the pocket, and was flat-out bad for much of the first half. He delivered an excellent extended play on third-and-4 that led to Malachi Fields' first NFL touchdown, then capitalized on Arvell Reese's interception to find Malik Nabers for a touchdown up the seam in the red zone. Winston threw an interception with less than a minute to go in the first half when Denzel Burke switched leverage pre- to post-snap and Winston threw it into his numbers targeting Fields on a dig, then threw another interception to Budda Baker to start the second half. He finished 18 of 29 for 250 yards with three touchdowns and two interceptions while being sacked four times, with improved red zone offense but still leaving questions about whether J.J. McCarthy could be seen sooner rather than later.
The ground game provided little support. New York averaged 3.1 yards per carry as Cam Skattebo rushed 18 times for 58 yards and Najee Harris added nine carries for 30 yards before a costly early fourth-quarter fumble that ended his day; the split was even until the fumble. Malik Nabers led the receivers after a shoulder scare on his 39-yard catch on the opening drive, finishing with six catches for 112 yards and a touchdown on seven targets, including the go-ahead score splitting Cover-2 after Reese's interception. Malachi Fields added two catches for 53 yards on three targets, including his first touchdown and a bailout on third-and-20 after a Cardinals rookie safety blew a Cover-2 assignment, while Darnell Mooney was held without a catch despite several targets, including one over the middle broken up by Baker. At tight end, Isaiah Likely caught seven of 12 targets for 66 yards and Theo Johnson caught his lone target for 11 yards and a touchdown. Up front, Francis Mauigoa had a miscommunication on the back side of a third-and-2 Skattebo run blown up in the red zone, and while Arizona loaded the line and crashed hard against the run, much of the pressure came as Winston held the ball too long.
Defensively, the interior run defense was solid but the outside was a different story early. Arizona sliced and diced New York on its first two drives with outside runs, pulls and crack-toss concepts as Mike LaFleur attacked a vulnerability exposed over the last two weeks. The front stabilized after that, with several stops near the line of scrimmage against inside runs, a key pass breakup from Shelby Harris that led to Reese's interception and a big sack from C.J. Okoye on a heavy blitz dialed up by Dennard Wilson. Abdul Carter took over in the second half as an absolute menace and carried the edge group after Wilson dialed up consistent pressure. At linebacker, the unit was picked on early and late to fit outside runs, but Tremaine Edmunds blew up a Tre McBride screen and Reese hit Brissett's arm to create the Newsome II interception, later tackling Tyler Allgeier in the flat on third-and-9. In the secondary, Banks authored a redemption arc with a second-down pass breakup in the final goal-line stand and the game-sealing pick-six after earlier losing to Marvin Harrison Jr. for a touchdown.
