KANSAS CITY — The Kansas City Chiefs outlasted the Indianapolis Colts 33-30 in overtime on Sunday Night Football at Arrowhead Stadium to improve to 2-0 in Week 2. After seven lead changes across four quarters, Kansas City walked it off in the extra period to survive a back-and-forth tug-of-war that never allowed either side to create separation.
Patrick Mahomes delivered a vintage response after a shaky 2026 debut coming off the knee injury that ended his 2025 season early. He finished Week 1 with 184 passing yards and a 55.6% completion rate, then hit 382 yards, three passing touchdowns and 68% completions against Indianapolis. Travis Kelce made his presence felt in a throwback performance, repeatedly finding space when Kansas City needed a spark including a touchdown that briefly put the Chiefs ahead. Mahomes' most significant throw was a perfectly placed 45-yard deep heave to Tyquan Thornton ahead of two Colts defenders — his deepest completion of the season — and he connected with Thornton again for 30 yards in overtime.
Indianapolis made Kansas City's defense look vulnerable a week after it held Denver to 176 yards of total offense on Monday Night Football, the fewest of any team in Week 1. Running back Jonathan Taylor gashed the Chiefs for 92 yards and two touchdowns on the ground to erase deficits and force the tense finish, and quarterback Daniel Jones repeatedly delivered on key passing downs. Kansas City did not sack Jones once, though it generated a key pressure on the final third down of regulation, a performance that will give analysts pause before declaring the Chiefs AFC West favorites.
The ground game provided balance behind Mahomes. Kenneth Walker led the rushing attack with 117 yards on 24 carries for 4.9 yards per carry, while rookie fifth-round pick Emmett Johnson looked stellar on four touches, mixing physical runs through contact with evasive jukes to avoid tacklers. Walker remains the focal point, but Johnson showed late-round value through two games.
The result capped a Week 2 Sunday slate filled with late finishes before the week wraps with the Los Angeles Rams (0-1) hosting Jaxson Dart and the New York Giants (1-0) on Monday Night Football at SoFi Stadium at 8:15 p.m. ET.
