DETROIT — Jalen Duren left no doubt about his future after a summer-long restricted free agency standoff. The 22-year-old center said Sunday he wants to spend his entire career with the Detroit Pistons, speaking to reporters for the first time since signing a five-year, $200 million contract. Duren missed the start of training camp as negotiations continued until the October 1st deadline.
Duren delivered a roughly six-minute prepared statement following remarks from Pistons president of basketball operations Trajan Langdon. "I am a Detroit Piston," said Duren. "I want to be a Detroit Piston for life. I want to give everything I've got for this city and the fans. And from me to y'all, y'all would have everything I have." He added, "I truly do believe in the players and the organization and the coaches that we have. I want y'all to believe in me, my work ethic and my ability to want to grow as a man and a player." He said he told his agent after his first workout in Detroit that the city felt like home.
The center also addressed what he called false narratives during negotiations, saying none of them came from him, though he acknowledged his silence may have left room for speculation. He did not shy away from his disappointing postseason. "It was humbling," said Duren. "I just need to get better. I need to get better for my teammates, my organization. There was a lot of film, a lot of film that was being watched over the summer." He continued, "I'm man enough to acknowledge my flaws, and I'm man enough to acknowledge that I'm not perfect. I'm also man enough to get my ass in the gym and work on those things and get better."
"Today is a great day," said Langdon. "On behalf of the entire Detroit Pistons organization, we are extremely excited to have JD back in the city of Detroit. He has been a huge part of our success and the turnaround over the past two seasons. We look forward to building together to have even more success going forward into the future." Langdon's confidence in a long-term deal never wavered, and Duren described his feelings about the finished deal as relief and excitement, especially for his family who also endured the uncertainty.
The commitment follows the Pistons removing the weight clause from the $200M offer to Jalen Duren, clearing the final hurdle before the October 1st agreement that keeps the young center at the core of Detroit's turnaround.
