CHARLOTTE — The Charlotte Hornets are waiving guard Rob Dillingham, sources told Shams Charania of ESPN, moving on from the 21-year-old just days after acquiring him from the Chicago Bulls. Dillingham arrived in Charlotte over the weekend in a trade that sent veteran guard Buddy Hield to Chicago, a deal in which the Hornets also created a $9.6 million trade exception.
Dillingham appeared in 30 games for the Bulls last season, averaging 9.6 points and 2.8 assists. That stint represented his most recent NBA action before the weekend swap, and Charlotte's decision to waive him ends his tenure before he appears in a game for the Hornets.
The waiver will place Dillingham on the wire and make him eligible to sign elsewhere if he clears. For Charlotte, the move opens a roster spot while preserving the $9.6 million trade exception generated in the Hield deal as a flexible asset for a future transaction.
