WASHINGTON — Anthony Davis said Monday he expects to play out the 2026-27 season with the Washington Wizards before deciding on his long-term future, addressing his situation during the team's media day. Davis holds a player option for 2027-28 worth $62.8 million and will decide after this season whether to exercise it or enter unrestricted free agency next summer.

"When the season is over," said Davis. "I'm going to go through the season, and kind of do what I do at a high level, and then, when it's over, you know, sit down and have those key conversations again with the front office." Davis is eligible for a contract extension, but sources told The Athletic in August that he and the Wizards agreed not to discuss one over the summer, instead waiting until after the season begins.

Davis previously said following his trade from the Dallas Mavericks in February that he wanted to evaluate the organization's progress toward becoming a legitimate contender before committing further. He pointed to optimism about the roster's competitiveness, citing the Wizards winning the NBA draft lottery in May and selecting BYU forward AJ Dybantsa with the first overall pick, along with the team's trades for veterans Khris Middleton and Deandre Ayton.

A four-year, $275 million max extension through the 2030-31 season remains a theoretical option for Washington, though unlikely given Davis' age relative to the team's young core and his injury history. The Wizards also committed four years and $212.8 million to point guard Trae Young in an extension this past offseason.
