NEW YORK — October is coming into focus as the 2026 MLB postseason field begins to take shape, with the New York Yankees and Tampa Bay Rays having clinched at least a wild-card berth and the Los Angeles Dodgers having won the National League West again. Several of baseball's biggest races remain unsettled, with the American League Central and AL West still up for grabs, the final AL wild-card spot hotly contested and National League wild-card positioning expected to come down to the final days.
The Yankees and Rays are the confirmed qualifiers so far, with New York also four away from clinching at least the No. 1 wild card and Tampa Bay six away from clinching the AL East and a first-round bye. Atlanta is closest to joining them at one to clinch a playoff berth and five to clinch the NL East, followed by Boston at three to clinch a playoff berth, the Chicago Cubs at four, Milwaukee at four to clinch a first-round bye, and Philadelphia at five to clinch a playoff berth.
Los Angeles needs six to clinch a first-round bye and San Diego needs six to clinch a playoff berth, while the Chicago White Sox sit at seven to clinch a playoff berth and nine to clinch the AL Central, Cleveland at eight to clinch a berth and 10 to clinch the AL Central, and Houston at nine to clinch the AL West. If the season ended after games on Wednesday, Sept. 16, the current postseason bracket would include the Philadelphia Phillies as the National League's Wild Card No. 2.
With magic numbers falling into single digits across both leagues, the next wave of clinches could arrive quickly as teams chase division titles and byes. The AL Central, AL West and the last AL wild-card spot remain the tightest battles as the regular season enters its final stretch.
