DETROIT — The Pittsburgh Pirates closed a long wait with a winning finish. Pittsburgh defeated the Detroit Tigers 4-2 in the series and season finale at Comerica Park on Sept. 27 to finish the 2026 season 82-80, securing the club's first winning record since 2018.

The Pirates went 82-79 in 2018, and the seven seasons since marked a sustained slide. The drought was tied for the second-longest in baseball this season, trailing only the Los Angeles Angels at 11 and the Colorado Rockies at eight. A year ago, Pittsburgh went 71-91, finished last in the NL Central and owned the fifth-worst record in baseball.

This season brought a clear step forward. Pittsburgh finished third in the NL Central, posting an 11-win improvement and recording just its fifth winning season in the past 34 years, a span that includes the three postseason appearances from 2013-15. The Pirates sat in the third Wild Card spot in late July before seven straight losing series dropped them six games below .500, a deficit they could not erase.

The result still shifts the trajectory. A young roster that entered the year with questions on defense and inexperience moved from an irrelevant, non-competitive profile to a respected, competitive team. With much of that young talent coming together and the possibility of retaining Brandon Lowe, a postseason push in 2027 now looks like a realistic target after feeling far-fetched before the season.
