Marlins Rally Past Dodgers 6-4 After De Paula's First Homer

MIAMI — Josue De Paula launched his first major league home run and Emmet Sheehan delivered six scoreless innings, but the Miami Marlins stormed back late to stun the Los Angeles Dodgers 6-4 on Sunday afternoon at loanDepot Park in Miami. Miami scored twice in the eighth and four times in the ninth without the Dodgers recording an out in the final frame.

De Paula broke a scoreless tie in the fourth with a 416-foot three-run blast to right field for a 3-0 lead, his first hit after four walks in his first nine plate appearances. Los Angeles added insurance in the top of the ninth when Alex Freeland singled, stole second and scored on Mookie Betts' ground-rule double into the right field corner to make it 4-2. Miami answered with a two-run single by Otto Lopez in the eighth and a game-tying double by Javier Sanoja in the ninth before pinch-hitter Agustín Ramírez hit a walk-off two-run homer off Brock Stewart.

Sheehan, coming off a 10-strikeout win over Cincinnati last Monday in Los Angeles, retired his first nine batters and finished with six scoreless innings, five strikeouts and 81 pitches despite a 25-pitch fourth where he stranded the bases loaded. Edgardo Henríquez, protecting a 3-0 lead in the eighth, allowed two singles and a walk before Lopez's two-run single snapped his streak of 11 consecutive scoreless appearances covering 10 1/3 innings. Tanner Scott stranded runners at the corners to end the eighth but was charged with the blown save in the ninth after two infield hits — a Xavier Edwards grounder on a bad throw by Freddie Freeman and a bunt single by Jakob Marsee — and Sanoja's tying double. Stewart threw four pitches before Ramírez ended it to left-center.

De Paula, at 21 years and 112 days old, is the sixth-youngest player in the majors this season and the ninth Los Angeles Dodger that young to homer, the first since Adrian Beltré on July 27, 2000. He walked in each of his first three games, the first Dodger to do so since Mickey Hatcher in 1979, and nearly added a second homer in the sixth with a 385-foot double off the wall in right-center. The three-run shot marked the Dodgers' sixth homer with two or three runners on base in 12 games this September, matching their total from 51 games in July and August combined.

Miguel Rojas appeared to tweak his right shoulder diving for a Joe Mack single in the eighth, was checked by assistant athletic director Yosuke Nakajima and stayed in before Tommy Edman pinch-hit in the ninth. Will Smith doubled in the fourth ahead of De Paula's homer and has three extra-base hits in his last five games, while Freeman went hitless Sunday and is hitless in his last 16 at-bats with 20 double plays this season. WP — Dax Fulton (2): 2/3 IP, 1 walk, 1 strikeout. LP — Tanner Scott (1-6): 1/3 IP, 3 hits, 3 runs, 1 strikeout. Los Angeles continues its road trip Monday at Cincinnati with a four-game series against the Reds.
