NEW YORK — Aaron Boone is not ready to discuss his future with the New York Yankees after the club was swept by the Tampa Bay Rays in Game 3 of the ALDS to end its postseason. The Yankees manager deflected questions about his job status in the aftermath of the elimination, saying that conversation will wait.

"That's for another day," Boone said. "Right now is about trying to reflect on this, trying to connect with guys right now as much as I can. [I'm] appreciative of a lot of things, but those conversations and things are for another day."

Boone has been the Yankees manager since 2018 and has overseen several successful seasons, including a pair of 100-win seasons and a trip to the World Series in 2024. He signed a two-year contract extension with New York after that World Series trip. Under his watch, the team has only missed the postseason a single time.

This season New York won 93 games and returned to the playoffs despite significant injuries. Aaron Judge did not play at all in the postseason and missed several months in the regular season, while Giancarlo Stanton, Max Fried and Gerrit Cole missed big chunks of the season. The broader context remains demanding in New York, which has won 27 championships in franchise history but only a single World Series title over the past 26 seasons. Tampa Bay, which swept New York in the ALDS, has never won a championship and has been to the World Series only twice in franchise history.

Boone has just a year left on his contract, and with an expected MLB lockout looming ahead of a new collective bargaining agreement, questions persist about whether the Yankees may opt to make a change to start fresh with new leadership when baseball returns. When that conversation between Boone and the front office will happen remains to be seen, but a decision will have to be made in the near future.
