SINGAPORE — Max Verstappen continued his resurgence with a dominant victory at the Singapore Grand Prix, winning for the first time at the Marina Bay Street Circuit from pole position. The Red Bull driver completed a perfect weekend after taking pole and winning the sprint race, then controlling Sunday's 62-lap grand prix for his 73rd career win.
Back-to-back wins have lifted Verstappen to fourth in the drivers' championship, now just eight points behind third-placed Lewis Hamilton. Hamilton had a race to forget in Singapore, falling from third to sixth. At the front of the standings, another podium for 20-year-old Italian Andrea Kimi Antonelli saw him stretch his advantage over Mercedes teammate George Russell to 102 points after Russell finished ninth.
The result puts Antonelli on the verge of his maiden Formula 1 world championship, with the Mercedes driver able to wrap up the title as soon as the next race at the United States Grand Prix. The podium followed Kimi Antonelli's late brake scare on the Singapore grid earlier in the day.
In the constructors' championship, Mercedes remains on course for victory despite Ferrari slightly closing its hefty deficit. Ferrari sits a comfortable second, while the battle for third tightened as Red Bull moved to within seven points of reigning world champions McLaren.
