MADRID — McLaren team principal Andrea Stella said Lando Norris lost his chance to win the Spanish Grand Prix at Madrid's new Madring street circuit because overtaking was too difficult. Norris started from pole position and pulled away by six seconds in the first 12 laps, a commanding early run that ultimately proved to be his downfall.

Stella pointed to the virtual safety car as the decisive swing. Norris had built such a large gap that he was too far ahead to pit when the virtual safety car was called, surrendering the strategic advantage to rivals who could stop with less time loss. Once racing resumed, Stella said the Madring offered no viable passing opportunity for Norris to fight back to the front.

The comments put early focus on raceability at the new Madrid street circuit, where track position and neutralization timing outweighed outright pace. Norris showed front-running speed from pole, but without a realistic overtaking window, McLaren could not convert the early lead into a victory at the Spanish Grand Prix.
